Thursday, October 5th: STEAMBOAT BILL, Jr.

A riverboat captain is on the verge of losing his ship and business to his rival, McGuire, who recently arrived on the river with his larger "floating palace."  His only hope is his some, Steamboat Bill, Jr.  (Buster Keaton), who has been away at college.  To the old man's horror his son retuns a beret-wearing, ukulele-playing, mustached wimp.  Even worse, Bill Jr. has fallen for McGuire's daughter.  In disgust he tries to take things into his own hands, but ends up in jail where Bill, Jr. must attempt to save him, save the family business, and get the girl.  The film includes the spectacular tornado sequence, perhaps the most famous comedy scene ever filmed - and the unflappable Keaton at the top of his form.

October 12th: METROPOLIS

In the 21st century a might city is ruled by a heartless capitalist, Alfred Abel.  His son Freder meets and falls for Maria, who cares for the children of the workers.  He follows Maria into the bowels of the city and learns that the workers are slaves living in appalling conditions in service of his father and the city.  Maria is also a spokesperson for the workers who are seeking a better life by peaceful means.  When rebuffed by hi father, he abandons his class to join the workers and eventually their revolt for freedom.  Metropolis, filmed with a cast of over 40,000, is recognized as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.

October 19th: SPARROWS

America's Sweetheart, Mary Pickford as Molly, is trapped on an island farm in terrifying swamp land of twisted trees, fearsome alligators, and quicksand.  The "livestock" are children that the evil Mr. Grimes captures, keeps and sells.  Any unruly children get tossed into the swamp.  Trying to protect and eventually attempt their escape is Molly, the eldest of the children.  The escape scene was filmed with real alligators and no double for Ms. Pickford - a scene that was every bit as dangerous as anything attempted by Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd.  "Sparrows" is a classic silent film melodrama with Pickford giving one of the finest performances in her career.

October 26th: NOSFERATU, THE VAMPIRE

"Nosferatu" is the first, and some consider still the  best, screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula"  It is a wonderful atmospheric work made more eerie because of its authentic location shooting.  The story tells of Von Wagenheim, a real estate clerk in the city of Bremen.  He leaves his bride to conduct a little business in the distant Carpathian mountains with an eccentric client named Orlock (Max Schreck), who lives in a dark and foreboding castle and has a fondness, he discovers, for sucking blood.  Von Wagenheim manages to escape and return home to safety - Or so he thinks.  But he has been followed by Nosferatu - and where Nosferatu goes, death follows!
