Zooming in on the entrance below the marquee seen in the previous photograph, we see what Carley Capital Group saw when it bought the theatre. At this point, the marquee had been removed (by whom?) because of construction of the Transit Mall. The Transit Mall was Charlotte's attempt to encourage people to go downtown by widening sidewalks, building bus rider shelters, removing parking on Tryon Street, adding paving tiles, and planting trees. Many of the trees have grown far beyond their intended size by 2000; most of the pavers have had to be replaced; the shelters leaked and were repaired or replaced; some parking has been reinstated.
