This was downtown Charlotte back in the days when Duke Power provided the Christmas lights. This picture of Tryon Street, looking south, in the '40s was provided by the Duke Power archives. Notice the gleam of the trolley tracks in the middle of the street; they stayed there until they were paved over, and then they were pulled up in the mid '80s during the Transit Mall construction.
The keen-eyed among us can make out on the far right of the photo the sign for the Mayfair Hotel. This building is known as the Dunhill Hotel today.
