What happened in ...
1988

Carley Capital Group, attempting to make the Carolina Theatre more modern and appealing and to fit better with CityFair, removes all the seats, railings, equipment, and decorations in an attempt to build a restaurant and combination bar and disco. In the middle of the year, for their own purposes, they demolished the lobby and office and retail space after declaring it themselves to be unsound. The lobby was never found to be lacking structurally. Later in the year, Carley Capital Group, citing financial problems, stops all work.
